VCCF and Rotary Club of Pleasanton Join Forces to Clothe Homeless Patients

For Immediate Release:  May 9, 2017

Pleasanton, CA – It’s amazing what a clean pair of socks can do for your health and sense of well-being. For many of us, achieving this is as easy as going to our dresser drawer. For those who are homeless, it’s not quite so simple.

Now, with the backing of a grant from the Rotary Club of Pleasanton Foundation, Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare’s Emergency Department team is instituting a new program that will provide for clean clothing for homeless patients in dire need. Donna Koon, Director of Emergency Services at Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare, tells us, “The homeless present to the Emergency Department (ED) for a variety of reasons, some of which may be caused by the lack of proper clothing to protect them from the elements. We want to be able to provide them with some basic items to meet those needs when they leave the hospital.”

The $2,000 grant, which was given in response to a request by ValleyCare Charitable Foundation, will fund the purchase of initial supplies for the program, including clothing and shoes in various adult sizes to stock the cabinet for patients. The Stanford Health Care ValleyCare Auxiliary will then assist in the support and maintenance of this important program.

“The Rotary Club of Pleasanton has been giving back to the community for 51 years,” said Todd Utikal, Secretary of the Rotary Club foundation. “The main source of funds for our foundation is our annual Father’s Day Spirit Run, which will be held on June 18 under the Arch in Downtown Pleasanton. This year, we were able to give over $85,000 to 19 different organizations and nonprofits in our community. We are excited to help fund the Valley Care Charitable Foundation, as we know they do great things in our community. We felt it was important to fund the launch of the Clothing for the Homeless program through the hospital’s Emergency Department to ensure all patients who are discharged from the ED leave with clean clothing and a sense of dignity.”
